You have booked your golden hour family session, hooray! Now the question is… what should you wear?

As a Reading lifestyle photographer, I have learned that what you wear can make a big difference in how your golden hour photos feel. The right clothes not only flatter in that dreamy sunset light but also help you feel comfortable, confident, and relaxed so you can focus on having fun.

My Top Tips

Stick to Neutrals & Earthy Tones → Think creams, soft blues, rust, and sage. They glow beautifully in sunset light and look timeless in photos.

  1. Avoid Loud Logos → Busy patterns or big brand logos can distract from the most important part of the image, you and your family’s connection.
  2. Coordinate, Don’t Match → Pick 2–3 colours that work well together, then spread them across everyone’s outfits. This creates harmony without looking too staged.
  3. Comfort Comes First → If kids are fidgety in itchy clothes or shoes that pinch, it shows. Choose outfits they can run, jump, and play in because they will.

I always tell families you do not need to buy brand new wardrobes for your shoot. Often the clothes you already love, the ones that make you feel like you, are the best choice. Golden hour light has a way of making everything look that little bit more beautiful anyway.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is that your outfits feel authentic. If you are relaxed and enjoying yourself, the photos will shine with that same energy. The glow of golden hour does the rest.
